Shop, Explore and Eat Out and Enjoy a Great Deal
Independent businesses in Lincoln are taking a lead in dispelling retail sector blues, by announcing a week-long event to cheer tourists and shoppers.
Cathedral Quarter businesses, in Bailgate, Steep Hill and The Strait are busy planning Enjoy Uphill Lincoln – an initiative aimed at encouraging locals and visitors to discover how much smaller businesses have to offer.
Lincoln BIG and Visit Lincoln are throwing their support behind Bailgate Guild members, after welcoming news that more than 40 traders have pledged to offer customers discounts or other incentives during the event, which will run from July 2 to 8.
Attractions in the area are also supporting this special week – with Lincoln Castle, the Medieval Bishops’ Palace and Lincoln Guided Tours taking part.
The timing of Enjoy Uphill Lincoln is spot on. The holiday season is in fully swing and people have a superb opportunity to also explore Lincoln’s world-famous attractions and enjoy events too!
The Lincoln BIG Makers’ Market is taking place in Castle Hill on July 7, from 10am to 4pm, giving shoppers an extra opportunity to browse and buy fabulous artworks and craft products and more.
Music-wise, shoppers will be able to relax and listen to performers taking part in the Bailgate Busking Festival, also taking place on July 7 (11am to 4.30pm) and ticketholders can look forward to being wowed by Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, who are performing at Lincoln Castle at night!
The City of Lincoln Council is also supporting Enjoy Uphill Lincoln by offering drivers (who pay by phone or app) a 25 per cent discount at its car parks in Westgate, St Paul’s Lane and at The Lawn.
Lincoln BIG Chief Executive Matt Corrigan said: “Whilst changing trends are nothing new, it is great to know that our unique independent shops, service businesses, cafes and restaurants are showing confidence and encouraging people to pop in and see exactly what they offer.
“Independent traders have long been recognised for their high level of personal service. They are also well-placed to respond quickly to changing times and shoppers’ individual needs, so it is always worth paying them a visit.”
Bailgate Guild Chairman Nicola Lockwood said: “There is a broad diversity of business types in this area offering individuality and specialisms which appeal to both residents and tourists.
“We are lucky to have the historic appeal of the Cathedral, Castle, Medieval Bishops’ Palace and the surrounding architecture, but the shops and eateries provide additional interest and enjoyment.
“Guild members tell me that they are being told, on a daily basis what a lovely area we have. I want to be sure that people don’t forget what we have here so they feel encouraged to return.”
Visit Lincoln Chief Executive Lydia Rusling said: “Traders behind the Enjoy Uphill Lincoln week are based in one of the most beautiful parts of our famous heritage city.
“Our treasured landmarks, including Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the Medieval Bishops’ Palace, are not only a “must” for locals and tourists – they are on the doorstep of fantastic, and individual shops.
“There is always something new to discover and Enjoy Uphill Lincoln week – when businesses in the area will be giving shoppers an extra warm welcome, by offering a wealth of incentives, it is a great time to visit them.”
