Getting into the festive spirit

Getting into the festive spirit

Lincoln BIG is setting the scene for a spectacular and unforgettable Christmas – packed with exciting attractions to wow every member of the family!

Special highlights include the return of Thor’s Tipi, a new Moroccan Souk and a visit by those much-loved Reindeer, who travel down from the Cairngorms to meet their old friends.

Then we’ve got sparkling Christmas Lights, and three fun Switch-On ceremonies, a tradition Lantern Parade and Carol Service, an unmissable Christmas Emporium and, of course, Lincoln’s World Famous crowd pulling market and other smaller markets.

Lincoln BIG Events & Promotions Manager Michael Armstrong said: “It may only be September, but this year there’s so much happening, that we have started planning as early as possible.

“However, we wanted to give local families, as well as festive visitors, a flavour of some of the fabulous events we are working on together with our partners.”

The festive season will kick-off in style with the return of the Norwegian-style Thor’s Tipi Bar on The Cornhill on Friday, November 9, where it will stay until December 31. This popular attraction will serve delicious hot chocolate, local craft beers and Scandinavian drinks and spirits.

“On Thursday, November 15, we will throw open the doors on our Moroccan “Market” which is going into Ruddock’s’ premises in the High Street, giving people a fascinating insight into the country’s ceramics, wood, metal, leather and other products.

“People will be able to see how some are made and the colourful Souk will give shoppers a fantastic opportunity to buy highly individual gifts. The market will stay open until December 31.”

November 23 is a special day in the city’s festival calendar, with Christmas Lights Switch-On ceremonies at St Marks Shopping Centre, in the central High Street and in the Waterside Shopping Centre. The details are still being finalised, but families need to be in Lincoln from 5pm to 7.30pm to catch this exciting event.

Reindeer from the Cairngorms will arrive in Lincoln on Thursday, November 29, where they can be seen close-up by families before doing a special parade from St Marks’ Shopping Centre to City Square.

It is anticipated that about 250,000 people will be making a date to soak-up the unique ambience created by Lincoln’s four-day, World-famous Christmas Market. The dates for your diary are December 6 to 9.

On Thursday, December 13, local schoolchildren will, once again, taking part in our traditional Lantern Parade, from the Cornhill to Castle Hill, where there will be a Carol Service.

People will be able to browse and buy presents at a fabulous Christmas Emporium in the grounds of Lincoln Castle, between December 15 and 22, and a light show is also being planned.

In addition, city retailers are staying open “after normal hours” to allow people to enjoy some leisurely Late-Night Shopping – until 8pm on November 23 and 29, as well as December 6 and 13.

There are also opportunities for further late-night shopping sprees (until 9pm) on December 20, 21 and 22.

And there’s more! Anyone looking for unique, handmade presents, should ensure they don’t miss Lincoln’s Christmas Makers’ Markets.  These are taking place in three locations:

• Castle Hill on November 2 and December 1, from 10am to 5pm

• High Street on every Friday in November and December and on

Saturdays, November 10 and December 15, from 10am to 5pm

• St Martin’s Square on December 8 and 9 (10am-9pm)  and on Dec 10 (until 7pm)
