Hear two Civil War spies spill their secrets - Aphra Behn, mistress of all trades, will tell all about her radical life and extraordinary adventures while an anonymous spy who smuggled a message to besieged Newark’s governor will share the painfully uncomfortable tale of how he did it. You can also make a code-cracking spy kit, a sealed secret letter and a periscope to sneak a peek at the enemy. Foundations: The Quest For Democracy celebrates #vote100 and gives you the chance to get on our soapbox and cast your vote in our authentic 18th century ballot box whilst we chart the fight for equal voting rights back to the 17th century. Meanwhile, Cutting Edge: The Changing Tools of War gets visitors up close with the incredible advancements in weaponry and armour that were taking place during the Civil Wars with stunning examples of swords and muskets, and you can feel the weight of armour for yourself with our ‘weightscoat’!
